Hi everyone. Kristan here. Let’s talk about link building and why it’s important.
What is link building? Link building is the art of gaining and earning external links to your website. Internal links are links pointing to and from your own pages on your website. External links are links pointing from other websites or other domains to your site.
Why is link building important, and why are external links important? Specifically, external links are among the top three ranking factors for Google. Links and content specifically are among the top two ranking factors. Not necessarily in that order, but we know links are important.
External links are essentially editorial citations and votes of popularity for your website. Another site likes your website enough to link and share their content, they’re essentially voting for your website. External links also pass page rank and domain authority and link authority to your website. The more higher quality sites you have linking to your website, it’s the higher your page rank will be. Additionally, links pass anchor text relevancy via the content itself that’s linked. So let’s talk about link building tactics and how you can actually earn external links to your site. Historically, link building has been somewhat spamming in practice, including link farms and link schemes, those will be black-hat link building tactics.
White hat link building tactics are essentially relying on great content to naturally earn those links. You want to create great content and then promote it to reach your audience and influencers. Creating great content or link worthy content should be the backbone of any successful link building strategy. Other white hat link building tactics such as public relations, brand monitoring or if you’re a local business, getting involved in local organizations and sponsoring local events can also earn those links.
